Faerie’s Aire and Death March

“Faerie’s Aire and Death Waltz (from ‘A Tribute to Zdenko G. Fibich’),” created by American artist John Stump, is a satirical musical composition designed to be virtually impossible to play. The score includes absurd and whimsical notations such as “release the penguins,” “like a dirigible,” and “gong duet.” Remarkably, despite its ridiculous demands, someone has actually performed it.
Passion Project
When I first discovered this piece of art, I wanted to obtain a large poster for my spacious walls. I managed to find and purchase a poster on eBay for $15, but it was too small and low-resolution to enlarge by 400% without losing quality. Unable to locate a high-resolution version, I decided to digitally recreate the artwork from scratch, producing vector art and adding exaggerated typography to match the piece’s over-the-top musical notations.

John Arthur Stump is best known for his satirical musical compositions filled with clever notation jokes, most notably “Faerie’s Aire and Death Waltz” (from A Tribute to Zdenko G. Fibich) (1980), a deliberately unplayable parody. Having worked in music engraving since 1967, Uncle John’s fascination with musical notation was evident—Greg recalls being intrigued by his “music typewriter” in his grandmother’s garage office. It’s no surprise that Stump would create such a whimsical and fictitious musical piece. His works have become popular among musicians and are widely distributed, often displayed as posters in rehearsal spaces. Despite this, Stump was extremely shy, and his authorship of Faerie’s Aire remained anonymous until after his passing.
